“Our Korean Community Sends Gratitude and Many Many Thanks!”

Last Saturday, there was a meaningful jazz concert held at Colorado Springs(3400 N Nevada Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80907) which was voluntarily offered by Sun-hee Kim. She has been preparing this open-free concert for the Korean War veterans in Colorado and their families. A jazz singer as well as a director of the Colorado Springs Integrated Korean School, Sun-hee said she always wanted to invite Korean War veterans for their selfless effort and service during the tragic Korean War.

Not only this concert, Sun-hee has been carrying out various activities for the community and has consistently held concerts through Korean schools or the Korean Association of Southern Colorado to do good deeds to raise money for Korean schools.

Mike Thomason, the secretary and historian from the Dutch Nelson Chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association also participated in the event and expressed his gratitude toward the Korean community for recognizing the remaining Korean War veterans and their service. “We appreciate the Korean participation, excellent singing, and excellent food for today’s event. We would like the Korean community to contact us anytime and we also welcome the introduction of the Korean culture. It allows our veterans to learn more about Korea.”

Jim McGibney, an honorary consul general and also from the Dutch Nelson Chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association held the microphone to host the event.

About 40 participants, including many Korean War veterans, their families, and those who came to serve for the event, enjoyed Korean lunch boxes and watched Sun-hee Kim’s jazz performance. Participants applauded her beautiful voice and when ‘Holo Arirang,’ the famous Korean traditional song was being performed, some veterans even shook their shoulders enjoying the Korean beat and music.

During an interview with Colorado Times, Sun-hee Kim stated “As a Korean, I always had a heart-to-heart debt to Korean War veterans. I have been thinking about hosting this event a long time ago but was hindered due to the COVID pandemic. However, I decided to prepare a small event for the veterans so that I can perform good songs and offer them with some Korean food and culture. I hope everyone could genuinely enjoy the event.”

With the sponsorship of Asiana Market, Yedam Gift Shop and KS Auto, many volunteers deliberatelly visited the event and offered help. Asiana Market provided bulgogi lunch boxes and Yedam Gift Shop prepared Korean traditional souvenirs and traditional teas for the participants. Yoon-jung Lee and Jenny Lee also volunteered during the event.
