A decade-long vision takes shape as leaders and supporters reflect on
progress and meaning
The “UN Heritage Korean War Veterans Memorial” currently under construction in Aurora, Colorado, has reached approximately 65% completion, marking a significant milestone in a project more than a decade in the making.
On March 14, members of the organizing committee visited the construction site at Generals Park (1561 Quentin St, Aurora, CO) to review progress and discuss next steps. The visit went beyond a routine inspection, serving as a moment to reflect on the years of dedication behind the memorial.
The project has been led by key figures including co-chairs Nobok Park and Suji Park, Board Chairman Seung Woo Lee, and former Honorary Consul of Korea Jim McGavney, among others. After years of planning, coordination, and perseverance, the memorial is now taking visible shape.
During the site visit, attendees reviewed the overall design using architectural renderings. The memorial’s central space will feature a circular layout, with the flags and names of the 22 United Nations countries that participated in the Korean War arranged along a pathway, allowing visitors to move naturally through the space in reflection and remembrance.
Construction materials and techniques were also discussed in detail. Granite imported from Korea will be used for the main structures, with each stone block engraved with the names of veterans. The ground surface has been specially treated to minimize glare for visitor comfort, while the memorial itself will rise to approximately chest height and include lighting for nighttime visibility.
Participants emphasized that the memorial is not merely a structure, but a place of education and remembrance for future generations. Landscaping elements such as trees and benches are being incorporated to create a peaceful and accessible environment for visitors.
The visit also included emotional moments. Becky Hogan, co-chair of the project and a Korean War orphan adopted to the United States, became visibly moved as she reflected on the legacy of her late husband, former Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan, whose vision helped inspire the memorial. Other committee members, many of whom belong to the war generation, were also seen holding back tears as they walked the site, witnessing years of effort finally coming to life.
Co-chair Suji Park expressed deep gratitude to supporters, stating, “Despite delays caused by the pandemic and inflation, our donors have continued to support this project without a single complaint. We are truly thankful.”
The memorial is being constructed on approximately 3,000 square meters of land within the University of Colorado Hospital campus, with the site generously provided by the City of Aurora. The total project cost is estimated at $950,000.
Once completed, the memorial will include 16 storyboards detailing the Korean War, 22 monuments honoring participating UN nations, and four traditional Korean gardens, creating a space that blends historical education with cultural significance.
While substantial progress has been made through community donations and funding from the Adams County Foundation, additional financial support is still needed to complete the project. The committee noted that donors will have the opportunity to have their names engraved on commemorative plaques, encouraging broader community participation.
Generals Park, the site of the memorial, is the only park in the immediate area and is frequently used by local residents. Even during the site visit, many people were seen walking and enjoying the space, highlighting the memorial’s future role as a meaningful community landmark.
The dedication ceremony is tentatively planned around July 27, the Korean War Armistice Day, marking the culmination of more than a decade of effort and community commitment.
