Aurora mayor, sister city committee, sponsors, and athletes gather for a night of unity and celebration
The Colorado Korean Sports Association, led by President Chanyong Um, successfully hosted the kickoff and fundraising night for Team Colorado’s participation in the 23rd Korean American National Sports Festival, set to be held in Dallas. The event took place on June 1 at the 2nd Home Community Center in Aurora, with General Secretary Jason Jung serving as the evening’s emcee.
Over 100 attendees, including Colorado athletes, association board members, sports representatives, sponsors, and local dignitaries, came together in support of the team. The ceremony began with the national anthem and a pledge of allegiance, followed by a welcome speech, congratulatory remarks, athlete introductions and oath, the presentation of the team flag, and a commemorative group photo.
In his keynote address, Chairman Junhong Kim emphasized the deeper significance of the event, stating, “This year’s sports festival continues the legacy of the Pyongyang Sports Association founded in 1920, and serves as a valuable opportunity to pass on the spirit of unity and sportsmanship to the next generation.”
President Chanyong Um encouraged athletes to take pride and compete with integrity, while expressing heartfelt thanks to the sponsors and volunteers who made the event possible.
Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman was also in attendance and delivered congratulatory remarks, highlighting Aurora’s commitment to diversity and the essential role of the Korean American community. The City of Aurora also donated $1,000 in support of Team Colorado.
This event was more than a send-off — it was a powerful demonstration of unity across generations and communities within Colorado’s Korean American population. It will be remembered as a meaningful occasion reaffirming the spirit of togetherness and shared cultural pride.
