During the holiday season, it is impossible to escape the sound of festive music—on the radio, from neighborhood carolers, or online. Music is a universal language that connects people across cultures and generations, shaping our experiences and perceptions of the world.
On Tuesday, November 26th, Jubilee Ensemble performed a holiday concert at Bethany Lutheran Church. I, Bahnya Kim, had the honorable pleasure to MC and experience the night live.
Jubilee Chorale:
The evening began with a heartfelt performance by Jubilee Chorale, setting the tone for a night of musical storytelling. The four young students recited “May You Always Have a Song”, a heartfelt and uplifting piece that celebrates the comfort and joy music brings to our lives. The lyrics share a wish for music to be with the audience in both happy and hard times. There is something exceptional about hearing young voices perform this song, as they embody the promise and hope of this world. Conductor Naryoung Kim chose this piece with careful consideration to portray the power of music and its presence in every one of our lives.
With a second song, the kids performed “The Sound of Dadeumi (다듬이질 소리)”, a traditional Korean song inspired by the rhythmic sounds of dadeumi, a Korean ironing technique. The dadeumi involves two people using wooden paddles to beat cloth laid over a wooden anvil, creating a steady, percussive rhythm. This process not only smooths and softens the fabric but also produces a unique sound that has become a symbol of harmony and teamwork in Korean culture. The song reflects this rhythm, weaving it into the music to celebrate both the tradition and a sense of community.
High School soloists:
Following, three high school soloists each performed a touching piece of music that night. Yuri Yun, a reshman at Cherry Creek High School, delivered a stirring rendition of “On My Own” from Les Misérables. Her soprano voice captured the heartbreak and longing of Éponine with raw authenticity, leaving the audience spellbound.
Another high school freshman at Regis Jesuit High School, Raina Yi (introduced as 이주아), sang “How Could I Ever Know” from The Secret Garden. Raina Yi’s mezzo-soprano delivery brought warmth and depth to the song, leaving the audience deeply moved. Her ability to channel profound emotion at such a young age speaks to the transcendent power of music.
Both girls shone that night, their voices finding a connection to experiences they may have never felt before. Yet, their voices resonated with the stories of the characters without the audience having to know anything about either musical- a true performer’s skill.
Another high schooler, Grandview senior and guest pianist Kian Lee showcased “La Leggierrezza”, its title translating to “lightness,” perfectly capturing the mood of the piece. He has been mastering the art of piano, a highly complex and classic instrument, for an astounding 13 years. Now, despite “La Leggierrezza”’s complexity, Lee would go on to beautifully encapsulate the grace and flow the composer had originally intended it to be performed with.
Little Jubilee:
Little Jubilee, featuring adorable kindergarten to 2nd-grade performers, delighted the audience with “Mountain Rabbit, Moon Rabbit” and “Mele Kalikimaka”. 산토끼 달토끼 is a beloved Korean children’s song, a simple and charming folk tune that depicts two rabbits. 산토끼 is depicted as hopping up and down the hills, symbolizing energy, freedom, and the connection to nature. 달토끼, based on Korean folklore, is imagined living on the moon, pounding tteok (rice cakes). This rabbit represents the mystical and whimsical, linking the song to traditional stories. The song blends everyday nature with magical folklore, creating an imaginative and playful world for children and an innocent image of nature. “Mele Kalikimaka” is a festive holiday classic, its title famously known as Hawaii’s way of saying “Merry Christmas,”. It contrasts traditional snowy Christmas imagery with palm trees, sunshine, and island hospitality, blending a warm island vibe with the holiday spirit.
Jubilee Chorale 2:
Then, Jubilee Chorale would introduce two more pieces. “Sing Allelu” was a very unique performance- while singing the joyful and lively song, they would also be performing bells. Not only would they vocally showcase “Sing Allelu”, but they rang bell instruments on the side. Multi-tasking is a difficult task, especially when juggling all the tasks that come with singing alone, let alone keeping on time with the bells. After diligently practicing the song, they performed “Try Everything”, an original soundtrack from Disney’s Zootopia. The song embodies self-belief and optimism, reflecting the movie’s core theme of pursuing dreams and breaking barriers, no matter the challenges or setbacks.
Jubilee Ensemble + Sohee Yoo
To end, all the singers sang “Christmas Peace Canon” alongside guest musician Melody Ahn on the flute, then finished off the enchanting night with “Joyful, Joyful, and Ode to Joy”, two-holiday spirit classics. The marvelous night would not have been possible without Naryoung Kim, accompanied by Sohee Yoo, two musical geniuses to thank for giving us a taste of the magic of music this holiday season. Every person on that stage that night, the workers who helped proceed the night smoothly, and each guest in the audience showed up in the spirit not just to enjoy a night of music but as members of the community and honorable citizens.
Music transcends language, culture, and time, uniting us in ways nothing else can. The Jubilee Ensemble’s holiday concert wasn’t just a performance—it was a celebration of connection, community, and the profound joy music brings to our lives. For everyone present on November 26th, it was a night to remember, filled with the incomparable magic of song.

공연의 시작은 주빌리 코랄의 따뜻한 무대로 장식됐다. 어린 학생 4명이 부른’당신에게 항상 노래가 함께하길’은 음악이 주는 위로와 기쁨을 노래하며 관객들의 마음을 사로잡았다. 이 곡은 음악이 어려운 시기와 기쁜 순간 모두 우리 삶에 스며들어 있음을 전한다. 김나령 지휘자는 이 곡을 선정하며 음악의 힘과 그 존재의 중요성을 강조했다.
이어진 무대에서는 한국의 전통적 다듬이 소리를 모티브로 한 ‘다듬이질 소리’를 선보였다. 다듬이질은 두 사람이 나무 방망이로 천을 두드리며 섬세하게 다듬는 전통 방식으로, 조화와 협동을 상징한다. 주빌리 코랄은 이를 음악으로 재해석해 관객들에게 한국의 전통과 공동체 정신을 소개했다.
다음으로 이어진 고등학생 솔로리스트들의 무대는 깊은 감동을 선사했다. 체리 크릭 고등학교1학년생 윤유리는 뮤지컬 레 미제라블의 ‘나 혼자서’를 열창하며 관객들에게 에포닌의 애절한 감정을 진솔하게 전달했다.
이어 레지스 예수회 고등학교 1학년생 이주아는 뮤지컬 ‘비밀의 정원’의 ‘어떻게 알 수 있을까’를 부르며 깊은 감정과 따뜻한 울림을 선사했다. 그녀의 목소리는 젊은 나이에도 불구하고 곡의 섬세한 감정을 훌륭히 표현했다.
그랜뷰 고등학교 졸업반인 피아니스트 리키안은 리스트의 ‘라 레지에레차’를 연주하며, 13년 동안 쌓아온 피아노 실력을 아낌없이 보여주었다. 이 곡의 복잡한 구성에도 불구하고 그는 곡이 담고 있는 우아함과 경쾌함을 완벽히 구현했다.
유치원부터 초등학교 2학년까지의 어린이들로 구성된 리틀 주빌리는 ‘산토끼, 달토끼’와 ‘메레 칼리키마카를 선보이며 관객들에게 사랑스러운 무대를 선사했다. ‘산토끼, 달토끼’는 한국 전통 동요로 자연과 전설을 동시에 담은 곡이며, ‘메레 칼리키마카’는 하와이풍의 크리스마스 노래로 청중들에게 독특한 연말 분위기를 전했다.
주빌리 코랄은 ‘싱 알렐루’와 디즈니 주토피아의 OST인 ‘모든 걸 시도해’로 두 번째 무대를 꾸몄다. 특히 ‘싱 알렐루’는 노래와 함께 벨 연주를 병행하며 관객들에게 색다른 경험을 선사했다.
공연의 마지막은 ‘크리스마스 평화 캐논’과 ‘기쁘다 구주 오셨네’ 및 ‘환희의 송가’로 장식됐다. 특별 게스트 플루티스트 안멜로디의 연주와 주빌리 앙상블의 화려한 합창이 어우러져 모든 관객들에게 잊지 못할 감동을 선사했다.
이번 공연은 김나령 지휘자와 유소희 반주자, 그리고 모든 참여자들이 만들어낸 결과물이었다. 음악은 단순한 예술의 형태를 넘어 사람과 사람을 연결하고 공동체를 하나로 만드는 강력한 도구임을 다시금 느끼게 했다.
이번 주빌리 앙상블의 연말 공연은 단순한 음악회가 아니라 음악이 가진 힘으로 공동체가 하나 되어 감동을 나눈 축제였다. 이 감동의 밤은 모든 참석자들에게 오래도록 기억에 남을 특별한 추억을 선물했다.
