It’s a rainy weekend and you’re not expecting any plans or interruptions. A Marketing Charts article reported that “…almost half (46%) reported watching movies through online subscriptions either every day (21%) or several times a week (25%)” in 2021 (marketingcharts.com). Take a scroll through Netflix, one of the world’s widely used online TV subscription plans. Did you notice there’s an entire section (that’s diverse!) dedicated to Korean productions?

K-dramas are definitely one of the top leading categories for most popular aspects of Korean culture. The beautiful scenery, language, and creativity of Koreans has captivated the interest and admiration of filmmakers, movie-lovers, and those searching for a good movie to watch on their day. The multiverse of Korean film productions expands with the growing versatility within the category. A unique characteristic of K-dramas is the female-centric narrative, where she finds love, figures out the dynamics of family, school, work, etc. However, the creativity thickens when you see award winning movies about zombie apocalypses, the silly college life of a group of young adults, historical fantasy, and so much more.

Wow! Now, it must have become even harder to choose which K-drama you want to watch on your next free day! Even if you’re not looking for recommendations, dive into the compiled categories below, listing only a few of hundreds of marvelous movies that overlap of several different kinds.

Classic K-drama:The classic K-drama. Young female who is an outcast in some sort of way, and is also the narrative of the story. A tall, handsome male protagonist comes in and they fall in love, and their love is either tragically fractured or is a tragic one in itself. That has been the classic blueprint for many K-dramas, and even in general film plots. What makes K-dramas more unique is that they are “often centered on a love story, series set in contemporary times often focus on family ties and romantic relationships” (wikipedia).

  • ‘Crash Landing on You’ -2019
  • ‘It’s Okay Not to Be Okay’- 2020

  • ‘Its Okay, That’s Love’- 2014
  • ‘20th Century Love’- 2022
  • ‘Weightlifting Fairy, Kim Bok-joo’- 2016

Action/Thriller: What makes action and thriller movies especially unique, is that the situations the characters are put in can be vastly different, from a highschool facing a zombie apocalypse like in ‘All of Us Are Dead’ (2022) or star-crossed childhood lovers similar to ‘Come and Hug Me’ (2018).

  • ‘Train to Busan’- 2016
  • ‘Strong Woman Do Bong-Soon’ -2017
  • ‘Squid Game’- 2021
  • ‘Mouse’- 2021
  • ‘The First Responders 2’- 2023

Fantasy/Historical: Those with literature interests as children, often enjoy the creativity and endless possibilities of fantasy stories. On the other hand, there’s those who prefer stories based on real experiences and timelines. Though contradictory, both are seen as vast black holes for creativity to be pulled into.

  • ‘Goblin’- 2016
  • ‘Youth of May’- 2021
  • ‘The Legend of the Blue Sea’- 2016
  • ‘100 Days My Prince’- 2018
  • ‘Moving’- 2023
  • ‘My Love From the Star’- 2013

Workplace: The workplace, a CEO Nepo baby who carries himself with a cold demeanor and falls in love with the not so fortunate yet hard-working employee, is actually the most commonly associated trope when people think of a typical k-drama. Its intense chemistry, stark differences in lifestyle, and changes for the better is what makes this genre one of the most loved. But, not always is this the case for workplace dramas, as it can revolve around two typical coworkers who are friends.

  • ‘Business Proposal’ -2022
  • ‘What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim?’- 2018
  • ‘King the Land’- 2023
  • ‘Coffee Prince’- 2007
  • ‘Touch Your Heart’- 2019

Webtoon based: Webtoon is a story art platform, for artists and writers to come together and create intricate stories or comics for viewers. Slice of Life: Unlike the stories above, which have some fascinating, out of the reach backgrounds, a lot of us live normal day to day lives. The workplace isn’t a place we seek our CEO millionaire boss to have affairs with (‘Secret Romance’-2017) , the usual roommate isn’t a gumiho ‘(‘My Roommate is a Gumiho-2021), and neither do we expect a zombie apocalypse anytime soon (‘Happiness’-2021). But, it is not out of the norm to fall in love as teenagers, get in trouble with the law, or have disagreements with your siblings.
