Because we are a landlocked state, people might think boating and enjoying winter water in Colorado does not present many wonderful opportunities. However, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, there are over 2,000 lakes and reservoirs where you can go to enjoy the scenic view of this season and even ice fishing. With Colorado’s winter season reaching its peak and spring quickly approaching the state of Colorado, it does not necessarily mean that you cannot have some last minute fun on the winter lakes of Colorado. Check out our list of the best lakes and reservoirs for a scenic winter ride in Colorado that will help you do just that.

Cherry Creek Reservoir

Cherry Creek Reservoir is a scenic icon in the Denver area. Perfect for people looking to stay close to home, this reservoir is open year-round for all your boating and non-boating needs. View birds and wildlife, recreate or relax with the majestic Rocky Mountains as a backdrop! Cherry Creek Reservoir offers a wide variety of water and land activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Due to COVID-19 and many people experiencing limitation of outdoor activities in Colorado, the park is currently experiencing heavy usage and frequently reaches capacity, so we advise you to plan ahead. Under the COVID-19 policies, both park and dog park – they have a fantastic dog park – are open from 5am to 10pm. Blue Mesa Reservoir

Located in Western Colorado near the town of Gunnison, Colorado’s largest body of water is a must-see destination for nature lovers. Blue Mesa Reservoir spans 20 miles and boasts over 96 miles of shoreline. It is part of the Curecanti National Recreation Area and offers two full-service marinas – Elk Creek Marina and Lake Fork Marina. For aqua activity lovers, Blue Mesa is a popular destination for outdoor recreation including boating, kayaking, paddle-boarding, water skiing, sailing and wind surfing. Located just outside Granby – about 2 hour drive from Denver – it is conveniently located in the heart of several major Rocky Mountain attractions. Lake Granby is one of Colorado’s largest bodies of water containing approximately 40 miles of shoreline. It is also known for convenient storage options for boats and trailers. This lake is especially famous to anglers but is also home to the Lake Granby Yacht Club. Located at an altitude of 8,280 feet, Granby Lake Yacht Club is one of the highest-elevation yacht clubs in the world. This is favorite recreation spot for activities such as boating, ice fishing, paddle-boarding, water skiing, sailing, and picnicking. You will be surrounded by amazing scenic views, hiking and mountain biking trails, camping, and can even go horseback riding all without ever having to leave Horsetooth Reservoir. Horsetooth Reservoir is currently open and includes RV spots, campsites and cabins, all managed by Larimer County Natural Areas. If camping is not your style, just relax in one of the condos in the area and easily rent a boat, kayak, paddle board and more at the local marina! If you are looking for a getaway that is conveniently located in metro Denver, you can check out Chatfield State Park. Chatfield provides many opportunities for wildlife viewing. The park is home to a wide variety of bird species, as well as turtles, rabbits, squirrels, deer, and the occasional bear. The park’s mixed-prairie and wetland ecosystems also contain many diverse species of plants. Boaters from all walks of life gather to Chatfield Reservoir each summer and fall to take advantage of its impressive waters. Located just outside of the Denver Metro Area, this is a water-sports haven for people from fishing enthusiasts to water skiers trying to enjoy this lake’s pristine water and scenic views. The reservoir houses a full-service marina including boat rentals and a floating restaurant! Most types of boating are welcome on Chatfield, from power boats and sailboats, to jet skis and water skis. Fishing is also big year round, with ice fishing chances in the winter.
