The Denver Art Museum is hosting their first ever K-pop program to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month! The Asian American and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month is celebrated during the month of May, and recognizes the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.

As many people already can feel, K-pop culture is one of the fastest growing cultures in the world, outpacing traditionally popular rivals like Chinese in multiple markets, which reflects the global phenomenon many used to call the “Korean wave.”

In Denver, there are already many fans that love and are inspired by K-pop and ‘KonnectPop’ is definitely one of the communities and leaders of the phenomenon. Collaborating with ‘KonnectPop,’ a Colorado-based K-pop fan community group that specializes in K-pop dance and performances, the Denver Art Museum hosts an opportunity to learn about the choreography, music, and art of the Korean culture.

This event will include two performances by Illuminate Dance Group, a short presentation on K-pop dance and the arts by Arianna Flory, Curatorial Assistant at Large, and Ji Young Park, the newly appointed National Museum of Korea Fellow of Korean Art, and a 30-minute dance workshop led by Illuminate Dance Group.

Working closely with the Denver Art Museum, ‘KonnectPop’ is hosting a special event called ‘K-Pop Dance Workshop’ on May 23rd Tuesday at the Denver Art Museum’s Martin Building (Level 2, Sturm Grand Pavilion) from 6p.m. to 7p.m.. This event is included with general admission of the Denver Art Museum and participants can wear something they can dance in. You can also visit Denver Art Museum’s website https://www.denverartmuseum.org/en/calendar/k-pop-dance-workshop-konnectpop to learn more about the event.

According to ‘KonnectPop,’ the lightsticks are allowed so anyone can show off their groups.
