Dianne Primavera Shares Insights on Key Outcomes and Future Collaboration Post-Visit

Colorado Lieutenant Governor Dianne Primavera recently led a 21-member delegation to South Korea from November 13 to 17, aiming to enhance economic collaboration and explore partnerships in key industries. This delegation focused on sectors such as semiconductors, quantum technology, aerospace, and battery manufacturing, highlighting Colorado’s strength as a hub for innovation and investment.

In her first post-visit interview with Colorado Times, Lt. Governor Primavera reflected on the visit’s successes and shared detailed plans for strengthening ties between Colorado and South Korea. This interview sheds light on the significant discussions held during her visit and outlines her vision for the future of this growing partnership.

Q: What was the main purpose of your visit to South Korea?
A:”Our visit aimed to strengthen Colorado’s global economic connections and explore new investment opportunities. I had the privilege of leading a delegation that included leaders in cutting-edge sectors such as semiconductors, quantum technology, battery manufacturing, and aerospace.
In Seoul, we held productive meetings with companies, investors, and government officials to promote long-term partnerships that would benefit both regions. Additionally, a delegation from the Department of Agriculture joined us to advance agricultural ties and opportunities.”

Q: What specific outcomes were you hoping to achieve as an economic trade delegation?
A: “Our goal was to expand the $1 billion annual trade relationship between Colorado and South Korea while building meaningful connections. We positioned Colorado as a premier destination for investment and innovation, emphasizing mutual growth and innovation across industries.”
Lt. Governor Primavera identified several areas where Colorado and South Korea could deepen economic ties:

  • Semiconductors: Leveraging South Korea’s global leadership and Colorado’s innovation ecosystem to strengthen supply chains and drive advancements.
  • Aerospace: Colorado, a U.S. leader in aerospace, sees strong potential for partnerships in satellite technology and space exploration with South Korea.
  • Quantum Technology: With Colorado designated as a national Quantum Tech Hub, the state is well-positioned to collaborate with South Korea in this cutting-edge field.
  • Agriculture: South Korea remains a top market for Colorado agricultural exports, and the potential for innovation in sustainable practices continues to grow.
  • Battery Manufacturing and Clean Energy: Collaboration between South Korea’s industry leadership and Colorado’s research expertise can drive breakthroughs in renewable energy storage.

Q: Could you share details about discussions on consular services for Koreans in the region?
A:”We advocated for the establishment of a South Korean consulate in Aurora to address the needs of over 50,000 Korean residents across Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, and neighboring states. During our meeting with Second Vice Minister Kang Insun, we presented letters of support from Colorado leaders, which were positively received. This effort represents an important step in improving access to consular services for the Korean community.”

Q: What is the likelihood of establishing a direct flight between Colorado and SouthKorea?
A:”A direct flight would significantly boost tourism and trade between our regions. While flight routes are typically managed by Denver International Airport and local officials, the state would welcome this development if feasibility studies support it. Given recent developments, such as Salt Lake City’s new direct flight to Seoul, Denver could be an attractive next step.”
Lt. Governor Primavera emphasized that Colorado is committed to maintaining momentum following this visit. The state plans to:

  • Invite South Korean companies to major events such as the Space Symposium and Denver Startup Week.
  • Host the Korean Ambassador in Colorado to explore bilateral engagement opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Korean Trade & Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) on a trade mission to Colorado.
  • Continue advocating for the establishment of a Korean consulate in Aurora.

“Colorado and South Korea have immense potential to collaborate on groundbreaking innovations and foster sustainable growth. Together, we can create a future defined by mutual success and shared progress,” Lt. Governor Primavera concluded.
