Fans Fly Over to South Korea to Say “Goodbye for 18 Months”

“It looks cuter than I expected.”

The oldest member of BTS, Jin, has started his military service. He is the first member within the group to start military training which lasts for five weeks at a boot camp near the North Korean border. Here, recruits will be learning about how to fire live ammunition and how to handle weapons. One of the most challenging tasks is being isolated in a gas chamber to withhold the effects of CS gas and having to detonate a live grenade.

Shortly before his leave on the 13th, Jin posted a photo of himself in a short haircut. In Korea, it is required to all able-bodied men to serve in the army for 1year and 6 months since the country is technically at war with its neighbor North Korea.

Despite his pleas to not come or visit him at the Yeoncheon army base in Gyeong-gi province, where media and security staffs clearly outnumbered a few hundred fans, many BTS fans came to the spot to even catch a glimpse of the star. “We came from Hong Kong 2 days ago. We love Jin and just wanted to say goodbye. We wish him all the best and stay safe and healthy and we will be waiting for him the 18 months,” said one of Jin’s fans who came to the army base to see him leave. Various banners along the roadway welcomed BTS’s eldest member as well as other recuits to the base, which is close to the Demilitarized Zone that separates South Korea from North Korea.

This finally puts an end to months of national debate in Korea about whether BTS members qualified for an exemption to mandatory conscription. This is because there are exceptions to athletes who win medals at international competitions such as Olympics and to some high-level classical musicians, but pop music artists generally do not quality.

Starting with Jin, other members are scheduled to follow and serve in the military for 18 months. The seven members will possibly reconvene “as a group again around 2025” after completing their service. BTS became worldwide superstars earning more than 46 million followers on Twitter and awarded Time magazine’s Entertainer of the Year in 2020. They are clearly a one-of-a-kind global phenomenon and their place in the music scene is very unique. Many fans are wishing the best for members’ health while they serve in the military and comeback to ARMY in the near future.
