하늘에 계신 우리 아버지,
2025년 독립기념일을 맞아, 이 땅 미국에 베푸신 헤아릴 수 없는 은혜와 축복에 감사드립니다. 1776년 7월 4일, 자유와 평등이라는 숭고한 이상을 선포하며 이 나라를 세우셨던 선조들의 용기와 지혜에 감사드립니다. “모든 인간은 평등하게 창조되었다”는 이 고귀한 외침이 오늘날까지 우리의 심장을 울리게 하심에 감사드립니다.
그러나 주님, 고백하옵건대, 저희는 주님의 뜻에서 멀어져 있습니다.
지금 미국은 깊은 혼란과 분열 속에 있습니다. 정치적 양극화는 사회의 모든 영역을 잠식하고, 서로를 향한 불신과 적대감이 만연합니다. 경제적 불평등은 심화되어 많은 이들이 고통받고 있으며, 인종적, 문화적 갈등은 여전히 이 땅에 어두운 그림자를 드리우고 있습니다. 주님, 이 모든 아픔을 치유하시고, 저희를 용서하여 주시옵소서.
자신의 이념과 당리당략을 내려놓고, 오직 국가와 국민의 진정한 유익을 위해 헌신하게 하옵소서. 분열의 언어를 버리고 통합의 언어를 사용하게 하시며, 서로 다른 목소리에 귀 기울여 합의를 이끌어낼 용기를 주시옵소서. 투명하고 정직한 리더십으로 국민의 신뢰를 회복하게 하시며, 약자와 소외된 자들을 돌아보는 따뜻한 마음을 주시옵소서.
미국 국민들에게는 평화와 화해의 영을 부어주시옵소서.
서로 다름을 인정하고 존중하는 성숙한 시민 의식을 허락하시며, 비판적 사고로 진실을 분별하게 하옵소서. 혐오와 분노의 감정에 휩쓸리지 않고, 사랑과 관용으로 이웃을 대하게 하시옵소서. 각자의 자리에서 책임 있는 시민으로서 공동체에 기여하며, 더 나은 미래를 향한 희망을 품고 함께 나아가게 하옵소서.
이 땅의 모든 교회들이 진정한 빛과 소금의 역할을 감당하게 하옵소서.
단순한 종교적 안주를 넘어, 사회 정의를 위해 담대하게 목소리를 내게 하옵소서. 고통받는 이들의 피난처가 되고, 상처받은 영혼들을 치유하는 주님의 통로가 되게 하옵소서. 화해와 용서의 메시지를 온전히 전파하며, 분열된 사회를 통합하는 다리가 되게 하옵소서. 다음 세대에게 믿음과 소망의 유산을 물려주는 거룩한 사명을 감당하게 하옵소서.
주님, 나아가 이 땅 미국을 넘어 세계를 위해 기도합니다.
지금도 전쟁과 폭력, 기아와 질병으로 고통받는 모든 이들을 긍휼히 여겨주시옵소서. 러시아-우크라이나 전쟁과 중동 지역의 끊이지 않는 분쟁, 그리고 전 세계 곳곳에서 벌어지는 모든 갈등의 불씨를 꺼 주시옵소서. 불안정한 국제 질서 속에서 평화와 안정을 이루게 하시고, 모든 나라들이 서로 존중하고 협력하며 공존하게 하옵소서. 미국의 리더십이 자국의 이익을 넘어 전 세계의 평화와 번영에 기여하게 하옵소서.
주님, 독립기념일의 진정한 의미는 단순히 과거를 기념하는 것이 아니라, 현재의 도전을 직시하고 미래를 향해 나아가는 다짐에 있음을 깨닫게 하옵소서. “하나님 아래 한 국가”라는 건국의 이상처럼, 저희 모두가 주님의 뜻 안에서 하나 되어, 이 땅에 진정한 자유와 평등, 그리고 평화가 충만하게 하옵소서.

Our Father in Heaven,
On this Independence Day 2025, we offer our heartfelt gratitude for the immeasurable grace and blessings you have bestowed upon this nation, the United States of America. We thank You for the courage and wisdom of our forefathers who, on July 4, 1776, proclaimed the sublime ideals of liberty and equality. We are grateful that the noble cry, “All men are created equal,” continues to stir our hearts to this very day.
Yet, Lord, we confess that we have strayed from Your will.
America is currently immersed in profound turmoil and division. Political polarization infiltrates every sector of society, and mistrust and animosity towards one another abound. Economic inequality has deepened, causing suffering for many, and racial and cultural conflicts continue to cast a dark shadow over this land. Lord, please heal all these wounds and forgive us.
May they set aside their ideologies and partisan interests, and instead devote themselves solely to the true well-being of the nation and its people. May they abandon the language of division and embrace the language of unity, granting them the courage to listen to differing voices and forge consensus. May they restore the trust of the people through transparent and honest leadership, and grant them compassionate hearts to care for the vulnerable and marginalized.
Pour out Your Spirit of peace and reconciliation upon the American people.
Grant us the mature civic consciousness to acknowledge and respect our differences, and the discernment to distinguish truth from falsehood through critical thinking. May we not be swayed by hatred and anger, but rather treat our neighbors with love and tolerance. May each person, as responsible citizens, contribute to the community and move forward together with hope for a better future.
May all churches in this land fulfill their true role as light and salt.
Beyond mere religious complacency, may they boldly raise their voices for social justice. May they become a refuge for those who suffer and a channel for Your healing to wounded souls. May they fully proclaim the message of reconciliation and forgiveness, and become a bridge that unifies our divided society. May they fulfill their sacred mission of passing on a legacy of faith and hope to the next generation.
Lord, we further pray for the world beyond our borders.
Have mercy on all who are suffering from war and violence, famine and disease. Extinguish the flames of all conflicts around the globe, including the protracted war in Ukraine and the unending disputes in the Middle East. Bring about peace and stability in this volatile international order, and may all nations respect, cooperate with, and coexist with one another. May America’s leadership contribute to global peace and prosperity, transcending its own national interests.
Lord, help us to understand that the true meaning of Independence Day is not merely to commemorate the past, but to confront the present challenges and to commit to moving forward into the future. Just as the founding vision of “one Nation under God,” may we all be united in Your will, so that true liberty, equality, and peace may abound in this land.
All these prayers we offer earnestly, in the name of our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
