I am half Korean and half Canadian. I lived in Canada for five years and frequently visited Korea many times. I don’t look like a Korean or a Canadian. I look totally different. I look Asian and Caucasian mixed.

I am in the U.S. now in Denver, Colorado, but I was not born here. I was born in Canada, as were my dad and my brother. My mom was not; she was born in Korea. I went and lived in Korea because my mom’s family was living there and invited us often.

One day, we had a problem. It was COVID. It was a disease, so people took COVID shots, but we did not.  No one let us into certain places like pools. It was hard for me as a kid to meet other kids so my mom decided to go to Korea. Also, we had to take COVID shots up to date to live freely in Canada. My mom, my younger brother, and I took a flight to Korea to get a better life, at least for a few months.

We had a good time with Korean families for six months. I went to a Korean kindergarten and spent wonderful time with my Korean family. We made a special event, like my brother’s very first Korean birthday. It’s called “Dol Janchi.” He was wearing a traditional outfit called a “Hanbok.” He sat on a table decorated with gold and silver silk with patterns, with tons of Korean traditional food, fruits, and white rice cake. “Doljabi” is the peak of the event. My brother was supposed to pick one among money, threads, a pencil, a judge’s hammer, and a stethoscope. Each object meant something. My brother picked a stethoscope. It meant he would be a doctor. My mom said I picked a judge’s hammer on my first Korean birthday. It meant power and authority.

When we came back to Canada, things went worse than before. My dad was threatened to be fired from his job because he refused to take a COVID shot. Canada said people couldn’t leave Canada unless they took shots within a few weeks. Suddenly and luckily, a U.S. company called my dad and offered a job. They wanted us to come to the U.S.

My dad’s friend in Tennessee helped us. He said, “You can stay here for a month.” So we did, then we went to Florida. We lived there for a month. Then we moved to Denver, Colorado. We lived in an apartment. Two years after, we moved to a house. That is where my multicultural family lives now!

I can speak two languages. I am mixed half and half, which is different compared to other people. Since I was born, I am already different than others. My parents made different choices already in their lives. We are not exactly the same as others, and no one is. Not taking COVID vaccines was OK for my family when everyone took them. I was used to being different in a good way. People think my family is different or unique or special, or I am a special kid, but all families are different and unique and special in their own way.
