제 2장 [Having a Humble Opinion of Self] 겸손한 자아관을 가져라
EVERY man naturally desires knowledge; but what good is knowledge without fear of God? 모든 사람이 원초적으로 지식에 대한 갈망이 있습니다; 그러나 하나님께 대한 경외심이 없는 지식이 무슨 소용이 있겠습니까?
Indeed a humble rustic who serves God is better than a proud intellectual who neglects his soul to study the course of the stars. 사실, 하늘의 별자리들을 연구하면서도 자기 자신의 영혼에 대하여 전혀 알지 못하는 오만한 자보다 하나님을 섬기는 겸손한 농부가 차라리 낫습니다.
He who knows himself well becomes mean in his own eyes and is not happy when praised by men. 진정 자신에 대하여 잘 알고 있는 사람은 스스로 겸허하기에 다른 사람들의 칭찬에서 행복을 얻으려고 하지 않습니다.
If I knew all things in the world and had not charity, what would it profit me before God Who will judge me by my deeds? 내가 세상의 모든 것을 다 안다고 하고 사랑이 없다면, 그것이 나의 행위를 심판하실 하나님 앞에서 무슨 이득이 있을 수 있겠습니까?
Shun too great a desire for knowledge, for in it there is much fretting and delusion. 지식을 향한 지나친 욕망을 버려야 합니다. 왜냐하면 그 안에 수많은 혼란과 기만이 있기 때문입니다.
In- tellectuals like to appear learned and to be called wise. 박식한 사람들은 자신의 학식을 나타내기를 좋아하고 현명하다는 것을 인정받기를 원합니다.
Yet there are many things the knowledge of which does little or no good to the soul, and he who concerns himself about other things than those which lead to salvation is very unwise. 그러나 수많은 지식이 영혼에 거의 도움이 되지 않거나 유익하지 못한 것들이 많이 있을 수 있습니다.
Many words do not satisfy the soul; but a good life eases the mind and a clean conscience inspires great trust in God. 수많은 글은 영혼을 만족시킬 수 없으나 선한 삶은 마음을 기쁘게 하며 깨끗한 양심은 더욱 하나님을 신뢰할 수 있게 영감을 줍니다.
The more you know and the better you understand, the more severely will you be judged, unless your life is also the more holy. 여러분이 더욱 거룩하게 살지 않는다면, 아무리 지식을 많이 가지 있고 아무리 많은 학문을 습득할지라도 더욱더 엄중한 심판을 받게 될 것입니다.
Do not be proud, therefore, because of your learning or skill. Rather, fear because of the talent given you. 그러므로 자신의 학식과 기술을 자랑하지 말고 차라리 그런 은사가 주어졌다면 더욱 두려움을 가져야 합니다.
If you think you know many things and understand them well enough, realize at the same time that there is much you do not know. 만약 여러분들이 지식이 풍부하고 학식이 많다고 생각한다면, 반면에 여러분들이 모르는 것도 더욱더 많다는 사실을 깨달아야 합니다.
Hence, do not affect wisdom, but admit your ignorance. 그러므로 아는 지식에 사로잡히지 말고 자신의 무지함을 인정하라
Why prefer yourself to anyone else when many are more learned, more cultured than you? 왜 자기 스스로가 대단한 줄 착각합니까, 여러분보다 더 많이 배우고 더 높은 수준에 있는 자들이 많지 않습니까?
If you wish to learn and appreciate something worth while, then love to be unknown and considered as nothing. 만약 여러분이 유익한 지식과 학문을 배우길 원한다면, 사람들에게 잘 알려지지는 것과 그들에게 존경의 대상이 되는 것을 피해야 합니다.
Truly to know and despise self is the best and most perfect counsel. 자신에 대하여 진실로 아는 것과 자아를 부정하는 것이 가장 중요하고 숭고한 교훈입니다.
To think of oneself as nothing, and always to think well and highly of others is the best and most perfect wisdom. 항상 자신을 무익한 존재임을 알고 다른 사람들을 높이는 것이 가장 위대하고 가장 온전한 지혜입니다.
Wherefore, if you see another sin openly or commit a serious crime, do not consider yourself better, for you do not know how long you can remain in good estate. 만약 여러분이 다른 사람이 죄를 저지르는 것을 보거나 심각한 범죄 행위를 목격할지라도 자신이 그들보다 더 낫은 존재라고 생각을 하지 말아야 합니다.
All men are frail, but you must admit that none is more frail than yourself. 모든 인간은 다 나약한 존재입니다. 여러분 스스로가 다른 사람보다 가장 무모한 존재라는 사실을 인정해야 합니다.

무엇인가 남들보다 좀 더 낫다고 생각하는 어리석음을 버리게 하소서, 남들의 부족과 허물을 판단의 소재 거리가 아니라 자신의 비출 수 있는 성찰의 거울이 되게 하소서, 늘 연약하고 깨어지기 쉽고 어리석고, 넘어지기 쉬운 존재임을 바로 알고 살아가게 하소서, 날마다 자신의 허물과 어리석음과 죄악을 발견하는 것이 많은 지식을 알고 자신을 나타내는 것보다 더 성숙한 삶임을 깨우쳐 주소서,
